I think it's much better then the previous design. Google.com has a white background... If you can handle Googles background, then this should be no problem.
EDIT:
You know what, nevermind. The best option would be if Gillian just made a new alternate, darker theme for all of you that simply can't stand this one. I'll speak to him about it.
