Let's get rid of the word "said".
I'm in 5th grade and my teacher is a really good writer and she says "said" should be dead.
So lets use other words instead of said.
Like:
Added, affirmed, alleged, announced, answered, asserted, claim, come out with, communicated, conjecture, convey, declare, deliver, disclose, divulge, do, estimate, express, flap, gab, guessed, imagine, jaw, judge, lipped, maintained, mentioned, opined, orated, performed, pronounced, rapped, read, recited, rehearsed, remarked, render, repeated, replied, reported, responded, revealed, rumor, spoke, stated, suggested, told, uttered, verbalized, voiced, yaked, mouthed, whispered

well, it is true that you should try to not use said.
HOWEVER
It's okay to use said as long as you add to it.
Example:
"Oh, Really?" The man said calmly.
But in general I agree, you should use other words, such as:
"YES, Really!" His counterpart Exclaimed.

I made this because most of 1LastBreath's failfanfics are like:
"Hi!",said Adam.
And it has an exclamation point...

yes well I said that is fine,
and no need to flame him -.-
In fact, anyone who is smart who infer the expression(an invigorated/positive attitude) there easily because of the exclamation just as easily as if he had put something else.
In this case (your example) it was fine. The author does not need to spoon feed you information which is easily and naturally inferred.
that being said, you also shouldn't just use said as it gets redundant

Yay, thanks for the words!
I hate the word said, yet I have to use it because I don't know any words to substitute it.

Screw not using said. Do you know how awkward it is for a reader when you have series of dialogue going like this:
"....." remarked Mr. A
"......" exclaimed Mr. B
"....?" wondered Mr. A curiously.
"........" answered Mr. B in a calm manner.
Simple is best if you don't want overkill awkwardness.

I use:
said
yelled
screamed
muttered
added
etc.
These are simple, just use other words when possible.

imo "said" alone is better like
"he can't find me..." i said
"he can't find me..." i said worrily
said alone is better because the adjective is sort of shown in the words used to explain the situation
SAID FTW

An adverb after the word "said" changes its meaning.So....I think you can still use said as much as you want if they have different meanings.

bboyz said that said can be said if its said with the right adverb said.
